Learning to walk

Learning to walk

Observing my baby daughter learn to walk, she was tripping, stumbling and falling before fully mastering the act of walking. She was determined to learn, persevered, tried, didn’t give up, tried again, and …voilà!

This seems so obvious. It’s human nature. We learn by falling down.

Then why are so many people totally blocked with fear when it comes to taking the first steps to pursue their dream lifestyle?

Why are some so fearful of taking action when it comes to transitioning from employee to living on their own terms?

Even though they so want it?
Even though, with time, the so-called comfort of the employee golden cage starts to become painfully uncomfortable?
Even though they know they are not living their best life?
Even though they could be taking advantage of the available technology and living purposefully on their own terms whilst serving others in line with their own values?

As a society, we are mostly conditioned to fear making mistakes and ‘looking bad’.

We tend to be more guided by worrying about what the neighbour might say than by taking aligned action to live out our desired lifestyle.

In his powerful book, ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’, Robert T. Kiyosaki writes:

“In school we learn that mistakes are bad, and we are punished for making them. Yet if you look at the way humans are designed to learn, we learn by making mistakes. We learn to walk by falling down. If we never fell down, we would never walk.”

And that also applies to quitting the uncomfortable comfort of the being a corporate employee and transitioning to building your own business and becoming independent.

Living purposefully on your own terms does not have to be unattainable.

What if we embraced that liberating journey of ‘failing your way up’ to fulfilment and freedom? What if we enjoyed and trusted the process?

Those stumbling baby steps are absolutely crucial.

As Robert T. Kiyosaki put it, “People who avoid failure also avoid success.”

Taking those steps is also something I work on with my mentees as they (prepare to) quit their corporate job and start living on their own terms by setting up their own values-driven business.

Have you taken that first step towards your ideal life?
